Month 2: Listening and Reading Accuracy
Month 2 moves from foundation-building into receptive-skill accuracy. You will learn to notice what each question demands, recognise paraphrases, locate evidence efficiently and review mistakes in a way that improves the next attempt.
Move from practice activity to measurable progress
Listening and Reading often improve fastest when practice becomes more precise. Completing more questions is useful only when you understand why an answer was correct, why another answer was tempting and what you will do differently next time.
During this month, your goal is not to race through endless practice papers. It is to build a repeatable process: preview, predict, locate, confirm and review. That process supports both accuracy and confidence under time pressure.
Keep your target visible: this article supports the complete IELTS Exam Guide. Continue checking the exact overall and component scores required by the organisation receiving your result.
What to concentrate on during Month 2
Question awareness
Identify the task type, word limit and evidence you need before you start answering. A familiar-looking question can still require a different response.
Paraphrase recognition
Connect the language in the question with different wording in the recording or passage instead of waiting for an exact match.
Evidence-led review
Record the exact word, phrase or sentence that proves the answer. This prevents guessing from becoming a habit.
Build a reliable Listening process
The official Listening test contains four parts and 40 questions. Recordings are heard once, so preparation needs to combine prediction, active listening and controlled answer checking.
Preview with purpose
Use preparation time to identify names, numbers, places, opinions or stages of an argument that may appear. Predict the type of word required, not the exact answer.
Follow the order
Listening answers normally appear in the same order as the recording. When you miss one answer, move forward instead of losing several more while searching backwards.
Respect the instruction
Check every word limit and answer format. Spelling, plural endings and grammar can affect whether an otherwise sensible answer is accepted.
Review the distractor
Notice corrections, changes of mind and rejected options. Write down what made the incorrect answer sound attractive.
Read for evidence, not just general understanding
IELTS Reading gives you 60 minutes, including answer transfer time. The most useful skill is not reading every line at the same speed; it is choosing the right reading behaviour for the question.
Map the passage
Read headings, opening sentences and visual structure to understand where different kinds of information are likely to sit.
Scan for anchors
Use names, dates, technical terms and distinctive concepts to narrow the search area before reading closely.
Confirm the relationship
Match meaning rather than isolated vocabulary. Questions often use synonyms, broader terms, examples or changed grammatical forms.
Separate false from not given
Ask whether the passage contradicts the statement or simply does not provide enough information. Do not add outside knowledge.
Your Month 2 IELTS study sequence
Adapt the workload to your availability, target score and starting point. Keep each week focused enough that you can review what changed.
Listening question control
Complete short Listening sets. Before each set, mark word limits and predict answer types. Afterwards, replay only for review and record distractors, spelling errors and missed transitions.
Reading evidence finding
Practise locating the sentence or section that proves each answer. Add the evidence to your error log instead of writing only the correct option.
Paraphrase training
Create pairs of question wording and source wording. Group them by synonym, grammar change, cause-and-effect language, example or broader category.
Timed accuracy
Complete mixed Listening and Reading sections under controlled timing. Compare accuracy by question type and choose two recurring errors for targeted repair.
A five-stage routine for every focused session
Preview
Identify the instruction, question type and likely evidence.
Attempt
Complete a focused set under realistic timing.
Prove
Locate the exact evidence or transcript wording.
Diagnose
Name the reason for the error, not merely the answer.
Repeat
Try a similar item within the same week.
Common Month 2 mistakes
Practising without reviewing
A score tells you what happened. A review tells you what to change.
Waiting for exact words
Train meaning connections because questions frequently paraphrase the source.
Reading everything slowly
Use broad reading to map the passage and close reading only where evidence is needed.
Ignoring answer form
Word limits, spelling and grammatical fit are part of accurate test performance.
Progress indicators to record
Accuracy by question type
Track matching, completion, multiple choice, headings and true/false/not given separately.
Evidence found
Record whether you could locate the source sentence or transcript phrase without checking an answer key first.
Error recurrence
Count repeated causes such as distractors, spelling, timing, paraphrase or unsupported inference.
Recovery speed
Notice how quickly you move on after missing an answer instead of allowing one error to disrupt the section.

Month 2 IELTS preparation FAQs
Should I complete a full Listening and Reading test every day?
Not usually. Short, carefully reviewed sets often produce more useful learning than frequent full tests. Add full sections when you are ready to measure timing and endurance.
Should I use subtitles while practising Listening?
Subtitles can help during language development, but IELTS practice should also include listening without visual support. Use the transcript after an attempt to diagnose what you missed.
Do I need to understand every word in a Reading passage?
No. You need enough overall understanding to navigate the text and enough detailed understanding to confirm each answer from evidence.
What should I write in an IELTS error log?
Record the question type, your answer, the correct answer, the evidence, the reason for the error and one action for the next practice session.
